The dual use of major ports in the UK is a vital component of national security. This week, following discussions with Vice Admiral Andy Kyte CB FCILT and the Defence Supply Chain Operations and Movements (DSCOM) team, a major tabletop exercise was conducted in partnership with the UK Major Ports Group. The exercise aimed to test how the UK would maintain the movement of military equipment if its ports were disrupted.
The exercise highlighted the strength of partnerships between Defence and industry. Representatives from all UK Major Ports Group members participated, with support from the Department for Transport. Working face-to-face proved invaluable, fostering trusted relationships that will enable faster and more effective coordination during future crises.
The exercise provided deeper insight into port operations and a clearer understanding of military requirements. It strengthened resilience, improved communication, and reinforced confidence in the UK’s ability to maintain operational readiness under pressure. By bringing together Defence and industry in this way, the UK continues to ensure that its logistics capabilities remain robust and responsive in any scenario.
