Reflecting on a Landmark Week for UK Ports

By Geraint Evans, CEO, UK Major Ports Group

Last week offered a timely reminder of the power of long-term investment in the UK’s port infrastructure. From national strategy announcements to industry gatherings and a milestone celebration, it was a week that showcased the strength and future potential of our sector.

Marking 150 Years at Felixstowe

Few sectors can look back on 150 years with such effortless confidence as the ports industry—and Hutchison Ports (UK) Felixstowe is a standout example.

It was a real privilege to join current and former colleagues to celebrate the port’s remarkable milestone at the Felixstowe 150 event. The day featured excellent speeches from Clemence Cheng, Chris Grayling, and Dr. Rannia Leontaridi OBE, who all spoke to the achievements of the past and the exciting road ahead.

The event underscored the deep collaboration between Hutchison and His Majesty’s Government in sustaining and growing UK port capacity, with Felixstowe firmly at the centre of what comes next. Many congratulations again to the Felixstowe team—and particularly to Debbie Coe—for delivering such a memorable celebration.

Industry Insights from the Multimodal Exhibition

Earlier in the week, I also had the pleasure of attending the Multimodal Exhibition in Birmingham. It was heartening to see optimism throughout the sector, and a shared focus on how long-term investability remains key to driving growth.

The conversations we had there reflected the same long-view mindset that informed this week’s broader infrastructure announcements—including the UK Infrastructure Strategy and the Crown Estate’s new plans for the Celtic Sea.
