UK Major Ports Group delegation in Morocco – a snapshot

Last week, a delegation from the UK Major Ports Group and its members embarked on a significant journey to Morocco, visiting the cities of Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier. This trip aimed to engage with Moroccan counterparts and understand the potential for increased trade and investment.

The first stop was the Port of Casablanca, where the team met with representatives from the Agence Nationale des Ports (ANP) and heard about new projects at the Port, which aimed to enhance logistics and processing efficiency, crucial for maintaining Morocco’s maritime connectivity. Exciting developments are underway, including a new shipyard, fishing port, and a cruise terminal set to welcome 450,000 passengers annually.

This was followed by a roundtable discussion at the residence of President of ASMEX (Association Marocaine Des Exportateurs), a non-profit organisation for promoting and boosting Moroccan exports to foreign markets. A productive dialogue with business leaders focused on expanding bilateral trade and exploring new collaborative ventures.

In Rabat, discussions at the Ministry of Equipment and Water considered Morocco’s maritime strategies. The ambitious 2030 National Port Strategy aims to establish efficient and sustainable ports that act as catalysts for economic activity. The plan includes the construction of five new ports, with three currently underway, and significant expansions to existing facilities like the Port of Casablanca. Integration of ports into urban environments and the development of the shipbuilding industry are also key objectives, supported by a $7.8 billion investment in port infrastructure. New shipbuilding facilities are being established in Casablanca, Agadir, and Nador West Med.

The delegation continued up the coast to Tangier, where they visited Tanger Med, one of Africa’s largest ports. The visit provided a firsthand look at the logistical capabilities and strategic importance of this hub in global trade networks. The port’s modern infrastructure and efficiency were standout features that underscore Morocco’s role as a key player in international shipping.

The UK Major Ports Group’s visit to Morocco was a resounding success, paving the way for future partnerships. By engaging with Moroccan leaders and exploring key sites, the delegation gained valuable insights that will inform strategic decisions moving forward. This trip not only reinforced the longstanding relationship between the UK and Morocco but also opened doors to exciting new possibilities for trade and investment.
